HOW DO I HELP HIM/HER STOP DRINKING?
THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA... ALCOHOLISM IS A COMPLEX PROBLEM.
How can I help the problem drinker in my life quit drinking?
There is no magic formula that enables you to help someone stop—or cut back—on his or her drinking. Alcoholism is a complex problem, with many related issues. Al-Anon can help you learn how to cope with the challenges of someone else’s drinking.
A symptom of alcoholism in the home may be the abuse of drugs by family members. Occasional discussion of this topic is acceptable at an Al‑Anon or Alateen meeting as it may be one of the results of living with alcoholism.
Changing your behavior may facilitate changes in the behavior of those around you. It may be possible for you to find a healthier way to respond to these challenges. There are no easy answers. Al-Anon meetings offer the opportunity to learn from the experience of others who have faced similar problems. Alcoholism is a family disease, and Al-Anon members come to understand it is a family illness that affects everyone in the family. Research shows that when problem drinkers enter a recovery program, their chances for success are improved when they are supported by family members who are in a family recovery program such as Al-Anon.
Al-Anon simplifies a complex problem by suggesting a “One Day at a Time” approach. Al-Anon will give you the tools and the friendship to discover that no situation is hopeless and that it is possible to find contentment and even happiness in your life through the Al-Anon program.
